Types of Microwaves

When looking for a new microwave oven for your home, there are several different types to consider. We tend to think of microwaves as all being the same, but that is simply not true. Not only do microwave ovens have various features and functionality, they also have different designs. There are three typical microwave oven designs and it is up to you to decide which one is the best for your kitchen.

microwaveWhen most people think about the microwave oven, they think about the traditional countertop variety. A Countertop microwave oven, as the name suggests, sits on your countertop. This type of microwave oven is more portable and can be rearranged easily to suit your needs. There is a lot of flexibility with a countertop microwave oven and they are ideal for renters or for families with changing needs. The disadvantage to a countertop microwave oven is that they take up a lot of counter-space, which be an issue in small kitchens. With a countertop microwave oven you must also take special care to make sure that there is proper air circulation.

Another type of microwave oven, and one that is ideal for small kitchens without a lot of counter space, is the over-the-range variety. This type of microwave oven is specifically designed to fit over your range and comes with a built-in hood that that vents the hot air away from the stove-top. An over-the-range microwave is a good way to save space and improve the functionality of your kitchen, however because they require a special in-stall, they are not recommended for renters. However for the home-owner who is trying to make the most out of a small kitchen space, an over-the-range microwave oven would likely fit the bill.

The third variety of microwave oven to consider is a built-in microwave oven. This variety of microwave oven is specifically designed to be enclosed and is vented accordingly. When you purchase a built-in microwave oven it includes a trim kit so that it matches your kitchen cupboards. The built-in microwave oven is not recommended for renters or for home owners who intend to make changes to their kitchens in a few years. However, if you are moving into a new home or renovating your kitchen, then the built-in microwave oven be ideal. This option seamlessly integrates into the design of your kitchen and frees up valuable counter space, all the while providing the traditional convenience of a microwave oven.

As you can see, there a lot of options when it comes to buying the right microwave oven to suit your needs. Before you purchase a new microwave oven, you should sit down and consider your current kitchen design and space constraints. If you are renting your home, then you will want to purchase a countertop variety microwave oven. If you own, but cupboard space is at a premium or you plan on changing the design of your kitchen in the near-future, then an over-the-range type of microwave oven is probably what you are looking for. However, if you have just purchased a new home or are currently renovating your kitchen, then you probably want to look at a built-in microwave oven. Whatever your circumstances, there is a microwave oven out there designed to fit your needs.
